With the help of the tone selection feature for AI-powered translations, you can adjust the tone of voice for your translation by choosing one of the following options: formal tone, informal tone, and default. The feature, in particular, chooses the pronouns and corresponding words that are used in your translation.
For instance, depending on the context and social relationship of the brand with the intended audience, the sentence "Thank you for selecting Lingpad!" can be rendered in German in a variety of ways.
- In the formal context, the pronoun Sie will be used, so the formal translation will be "Vielen Dank, dass Sie sich für Lingpad entschieden haben!"
- In informal situations, the pronoun du is preferred, so the appropriate translation will be "Danke, dass du dich für Lingpad entschieden hast!"
- If you choose the default option, the system will detect tone based on previous conversations and render the relevant translations - sometimes a mix of both formal and informal tones such as "Danke, dass Sie sich für Lingpad entschieden haben!" (Note how the system uses the informal translation for "thank" but formal translation for the pronoun "you".)
Currently, you can use this feature when translating into the following languages:
- Dutch
- French
- German
- Italian
- Japanese*
- Polish
- Spanish
- Russian
- Portuguese**
* For Japanese translations, our system follows two tone sets: polite and plain.
** Available for both target languages Portuguese (all Portuguese varieties excluding Brazilian Portuguese) and Portuguese (Brazilian).
Note:
Plain Tone: The plain tone is appropriate for casual conversations with friends but also for some formal written texts such as academic papers and news articles. With the plain tone, 常体 (jōtai) in Japanese, sentences often finish with da or dearu.
Polite Tone: The polite tone is used, for example, in formal situations such as conversations with superiors, colleagues or people you are not close to, and in business emails. With the polite tone, 敬体 (keitai) in Japanese, sentences often end with desu or masu, showing respect for the target audience.
On the Lingpad System:
If your brand tone has a polite, respectable tone of voice while communicating with your customers, choose the 'formal' tone. However, if your brand has a plain, friendly tone of voice, choose the 'informal' tone.
We are constantly adding new languages and will update it here as and when any updates come up.
